Why Authenticity and Traceability Dominated the Conversation
This year at Vitafoods Europe, one topic consistently stood out across the nutraceutical and food industries: how to build greater trust and verification within increasingly complex global supply chains.
Dr. Julia Lee was on the ground alongside the Natural Trace team, meeting with ingredient suppliers, manufacturers, contract manufacturers, and brand owners from around the world. From formal meetings to conversations on the exhibition floor, the industry focus was clear, companies are actively looking for stronger ways to protect product authenticity, ingredient integrity, and brand reputation.
It was also fantastic reconnecting with many familiar and friendly faces following our successful Start-up Challenge recognition at Vitafoods last year, while also meeting new companies equally passionate about innovation, transparency, and the future of trusted supply chains.
The Shift From Traceability to Verification
Traditional traceability systems remain important, but many businesses share concerns that documentation, packaging labels, and digital records alone are no longer enough to guarantee authenticity.
As supply chains become more global and fragmented, the risks surrounding ingredient substitution, dilution, counterfeiting, grey-market diversion, and unauthorised manufacturing continue to increase. One of the strongest themes emerging from Vitafoods Europe 2026 was the shift from simply tracking products to being able to scientifically verify the product itself.
This growing focus on supply chain transparency and product verification created strong interest in technologies that can provide evidence directly linked to the physical product rather than relying solely on external systems.
Growing Interest in In-Product Traceability Technology
Throughout the event, the Natural Trace team shared how NaturalTag™ enables a product to carry its own invisible, food-grade molecular barcode directly within the product itself.
Combined with NaturalDetect™ PCR testing and NaturalCloud™ digital traceability tool, the technology allows products to be verified at multiple points across the supply chain, helping support product authentication, traceability, and supply chain integrity.
What resonated strongly with attendees was the ability to move beyond packaging-based systems and create evidence directly connected to the product itself. Many conversations centred around premium nutraceutical ingredients, branded formulations, functional foods, oils, botanicals, and export supply chains where maintaining trust and authenticity is becoming increasingly critical.
There was also growing interest in technologies that can integrate into existing manufacturing and quality assurance systems without creating operational complexity, particularly as companies look for scalable solutions that can support both compliance and brand protection.
Broader Trends Emerging for 2026

Beyond traceability and authenticity, several broader industry trends were impossible to ignore throughout the event.
Gut health and microbiome-focused products continued to dominate across multiple categories, with increasing innovation around next-generation probiotics, postbiotics, synbiotics, and women’s health formulations. There was also strong momentum around healthy ageing, cognitive health, metabolic wellness, and products supporting energy and stress management.
Another noticeable trend was the continued rise of clean-label and naturally derived ingredients, with brands increasingly focused on transparency, sustainability, and simplified ingredient decks. Many companies are clearly responding to growing consumer demand for products that are not only effective, but also trusted and backed by stronger scientific validation.
Dr. Julia Lee also observed the strong momentum of the European nutraceutical market overall, noting that the industry is growing rapidly as consumers increasingly shift toward scientifically backed products and ingredients. Alongside growing expectations around transparency and sustainability, European manufacturers are continuing to distinguish themselves globally, with many businesses actively expanding exports into international markets through diverse distribution channels. As demand grows, innovative manufacturers are increasingly recognising the need to protect their brands, formulations, and intellectual property alongside this expansion.
The event also highlighted how rapidly the nutraceutical sector is evolving toward more premium and specialised formulations. As ingredient value increases, so too does the importance of protecting product integrity throughout the supply chain.
Supplement Fraud and Ingredient Authenticity Remain Key Concerns
Another major theme across Vitafoods Europe was the growing awareness around Supplement authenticity and ingredient fraud. Businesses are under increasing pressure from consumers, retail partners, and regulators to provide greater confidence around what is inside a product and where it has come from. The conversation is no longer just about visibility, it is increasingly about proof.
For many companies, the ability to validate origin claims, verify ingredient usage, and strengthen quality assurance processes is becoming a critical part of maintaining consumer trust and protecting long-term brand reputation.
Looking Ahead After Vitafoods Europe 2026
For Natural Trace, Vitafoods Europe 2026 reinforced the growing global demand for trusted, science-based traceability solutions that help protect products beyond the label.
As the nutraceutical industry continues to evolve, businesses are increasingly recognising that transparency alone is not enough, verification and proof are becoming essential.
A huge thank you to everyone who visited the Natural Trace stand in Barcelona and shared their insights, challenges, and ideas with us throughout the event. We’re excited to continue these conversations and work alongside industry leaders focused on the future of product authenticity and supply chain trust.
